How to teach 'Paw'
What you’ll need:
- A quiet room/place with little to no distractions
- Some small tasty treats (optional)
- Clicker (optional)
- Praise and patience
How to:
- Show your dog a treat, place it in your hand and make a fist.
- Put your fist near to the ground, near your dogs feet.
- Encourage your dog to paw at your hand, for example saying ‘get it’, ‘where is it’, ‘find it’.
- As soon as your dog lifts their paw off the ground click/reward.
- Before raising their paw they will likely sniff and lick at your hand, just ignore these actions and wait for the paw.
- Repeat this a few times.
- Now bring your hand up higher and when your dog paws your hand, click/reward
- Again repeat this until your dog has the hang of it.
- Now without a treat in hand, hand out, palm up, wait for your dog to paw your hand and click/reward, repeat.
- Start to add in the command i.e ‘paw’, ‘left/right paw’, ‘hand’
- continue to practice until they get the hang of it.
Important notes
- To start with you may need to be very patient, as your dog may just continue to lick and gnaw at your hand.
- Once your dog starts to understand what they need to do, don’t try and advance to fast.
- Train in short bursts, as too much at once will cause disinterest and ineffective commands.
